Kiawah Island is a beautiful barrier island just a few miles from historic Charleston, South Carolina. The island covers 10,000 acres with a maritime forest of oaks, palmetto and pines, hickories, sweetgum and magnolia trees and sea oats.

Kiawah Island boasts over 10 miles of beach and dune which provide a number of important functions. These include storm protection for upland areas; habitat for a variety of plant and animal species; nesting habitat for sea turtles; and recreational opportunities for residents and visitors.

Beachwalker County Park is a public beach access located on Kiawah Island. The park offers a wide sandy front beach with a large designated swimming area, dressing areas, outdoor showers, restrooms, picnic area with grills, Snack bar (seasonal), beach chair & umbrella rentals.

Kiawah Island is known for its golf and golfers can enjoy one or all of Kiawah Island Golf Resort's four award-winning courses that are open to the public. There are also two complete tennis centers to challenge you.

Biking on Kiawah's thirty-plus miles of asphalt bike paths is one of the best ways to tour the island. There is a ten-mile bike path that runs for the full length of the island, and most bike paths are generally set off the main roads and are delightful to ride.

For those who in enjoy wildlife, visit the nature center at Night Heron Park. Take your own nature tour on the many miles of bike trails, or embark on a sea kayak journey to enjoy the birds, aquatic life, and vegetation found on Kiawah. There are 18 species of mammals and more than 30 species of reptiles and amphibians, including alligators.

A couple of great picnicking spots on the island include the nature trail off Sparrow Road and at the gazebo located at the tip of the west end of the island at Beachwalker Park.
